Tucked away towards the southern end of the street to the west of Street 3 (towards the river) where it intersects with Street 2, Dong Tong Market is worth a trip if you’re looking for anything from snacks, fresh fruit, a bowl of noodle soup — we’re told the stalls on the street outside are very good for this, provided you’re not too overly hung up on things like hygiene — clothes, or gold jewellery.
We dropped in for a meander, and found ourselves fascinated by the gold workers at the southern end of the market as they hammered, etched, melted, cooked, cleaned and polished tiny pieces of shiny, bright yellow metal into elaborate jewellery ready for sale from the vendors nearby.
We can’t vouch for the prices — not knowing the real value of gold — or the quality of the gold, but if you’re buying, we’d recommend bargaining with the vendors.
There is a food quarter in the centre of the market which also apparently does good soups and noodles, but again, it would pay not to pay too close attention to how clean things are — perhaps not recommended for weak stomachs.
However, we were told by more than one person in town that the food here is pretty good. If that doesn’t grab you, then there is plenty of fresh local fruit which will fill the gap.
