Siem Reap town isn’t really Cambodia anymore. At least, downtown Siem Reap isn’t. It’s full of foreign restaurants that are full of foreigners eating foreign food (even the ‘local’ food in the restaurants catering to foreigners is foreign, as it’s prepared with ingredients from Thailand and Vietnam), and drinking foreign drinks (apart from Cambodia’s beers, on which I really must do some extensive research for professional purposes very soon). It’s comforting in a way when Cambodia still, undeservedly, carries the mantle of being a little bit of an edgy, scary place to go, and you can’t really blame people for taking refuge in it.
Siem Reap offers a booming nightlife and bar scene stretching to near dawn these days, with the bars coming to life around dusk as people return from the day's touring, and the last few pubs and clubs closing as late as 4AM.
Bars and tippling venues are located across town but the center of the action is the Pub Street and Old Market area where many of the most popular bars and clubs are clustered over several square blocks.
Pub Street itself, Street 8, is at the heart of it, lined end to end with restaurants and bars including such well known places as Angkor What? Bar, Temple Club, Le Papier Tigre and Red Piano. The Pub Street area alleys as well as the surrounding street also harbor a variety of places - cocktail bars, expat and tourist pubs, eclectic little neighborhood places and more.
