OVERVIEW

Virachey National Park is one of the largest protected areas in Cambodia, stretching for 3325 sq km east to Vietnam, north to Laos and west to Stung Treng Province. The park has never been fully explored and is home to a number of rare mammals, including elephants, clouded leopards and sun bears, although your chances of seeing any of these creatures are extremely slim. However, you’ll probably hear endangered gibbons and you might spot great hornbills, giant ibis and other rare birds. So important is the park to the Mekong region that it was designated an Asean Heritage Park in 2003. It is only possible to visit the park on organised treks booked through the Virachey National Park Eco-Tourism Information Centre in Ban Lung. The usual gateway is Ta Veng District on the Tonlé San, about 57km north of Ban Lung on a rollercoaster of a road.

Virachey National Park (Khmer: ឧទ្យានជាតិវីរជ័យ) is a national park in north-eastern Cambodia. Although partly protecting flora and fauna of international conservation priority, the park is under serious threat from illegal logging in the region.

The park is one of only two Cambodian ASEAN Heritage Parks and is one of the top priority areas for conservation in Southeast Asia. The park overlaps Ratanakiri and Stung Treng Provinces in north-eastern Cambodia covering an area of 3,325 km2.

Virachey National Park was created under the Royal Decree Concerning the Creation and Designation of Protected Areas, issued on 1 November 1993, and is under the administration of the Ministry of Environment of Cambodia.

Virachey National Park is the largest national park in Cambodia, home to beautiful forests and an uncharted number of plants and animals. Explore a small part of it by taking an overnight or multi-day trek.

Covering 3,325 square kilometres, the park boasts semi-evergreen lowlands, cloud forests, upland savannahs, bamboo thickets and occasional patches of mixed deciduous forest. It is home to species such as guar, clouded leopard cats, elephants, gibbons, sun bears, and innumerable other mammal, bird, plant and tree species. They are literally innumerable, since so much of Virachey remains unexplored. It is also home to small groups of ethnic minorities.

The Description of Virachey National Park Ratanakiri

Located in some of the most deep and isolated jungles of Cambodia, Virachey is largely unexplored and holds a large assortment of wildlife, waterfalls and mountains. The park comprises dense semi-evergreen lowlands, montane forests, upland savannah, bamboo thickets and occasional patches of mixed deciduous forest. Most of the area lies above 400 meters up to 1,500 meters.
